Brake Pad Installation Tips

The most common complaint after disc brake service is "NOISE". Brake pads are often singled out as the cause. The friction material does "NOT" generate the "MAJORITY" of brake noise. It is caused by vibration of a brake component that is not properly installed, insulated, secured or lubricated. Improper insulating of the disc pads from the caliper housing or piston is the most common cause of disc brake noise.

TO HELP IN ELIMINATING CUSTOMER COMEBACKS AND FOR AN OVERALL BETTER PERFORMING BRAKE JOB ALWAYS USE A PREMIUM QUALITY FRICTION MATERIAL RECOMMENDED BY THE FRICTION MANUFACTURER AND FOLLOW THESE STEPS

 

  • FRICTION REPLACEMENT ALONE DOES NOT "MAKE" FOR A TROUBLE OR "NOISE" FREE BRAKE JOB

  • ALWAYS DO A COMPLETE INSPECTION PRIOR TO RECOMMENDING ANY REPAIRS TO YOUR CUSTOMER

  • ALWAYS TURN THE ROTOR AND APPLY A NON DIRECTIONAL SWIRL (DUAL) TO THE ROTOR SURFACE. REPLACE IF NOT WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS OR IF HOT SPOTS ARE PREVALENT. ALWAYS CHECK ANY ROTOR, NEW OR USED, TO BE SURE THERE IS NO "RTV", ROTOR THICKNESS VARIATION

  • ALWAYS WASH THE ROTOR OR DRUM WITH COLD WATER USING A CLEAR DETERGENT LIQUID TO DISSIPATE SURFACE MAGNETISM AND REMOVE THE FINE PARTICLES AND DUST THAT CONTRIBUTE TO NOISE IF NOT REMOVED ALWAYS CHECK AND ADJUST IF NECESSARY WHEEL SPEED SENSORS NEVER APPLY ANY TYPE OF FOREIGN SUBSTANCE TO THE BACK OF A SHIMMED "KEM" DISC PAD OTHER THEN KEM'S SC50A SILICONE COMPOUND. ALWAYS INSTALL THE CORRECT "KEM" FRICTION PRO PLATFORM ENHANCED MATERIAL

  • ALWAYS USE A TORQUE WRENCH WHEN TIGHTENING THE WHEEL LUGS OR NUTS AND FOLLOW THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS ALWAYS BLEED THE SYSTEM AND DO A COMPLETE BRAKE FLUID FLUSH

  • IF THE FLUID SHOWS ANY SIGNS OF CONTAMINATION OR EXCESS MILEAGE BE SURE TO CHECK THE STOP LIGHT SWITCH AND MASTER CYLINDER PUSH ROD, IF ADJUSTABLE TYPE, FOR CORRECT ADJUSTMENT.  MOST MANUFACTURERS RECOMMEND FLUSHING OF BRAKE FLUID EVERY 18-24 MONTHS.

  • ALWAYS BE SURE TO LUBRICATE ALL METAL TO METAL PARTS AND BE SURE THERE IS GOOD MOVEMENT WITHIN THE CALIPER

  • ALWAYS CHECK THE REAR CALIPER FOR PROPER DISC PAD TO ROTOR CLEARANCE AND MOVEMENT

  • ALWAYS CHECK AND ADJUST PARKING BRAKE

  • ALWAYS CHECK AND ADJUST REAR BRAKE SHOES

  • ALWAYS REPLACE DISC OR DRUM HARDWARE IF WORN, BROKEN OR VEHICLE HAS EXCESSIVE MILEAGE (50,000 MILES)

  • ALWAYS TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO ENSURE PROPER BRAKING AND FEEL
